Three Receive 2010 South Shore Outstanding Teacher Award
September 2010

Three area teachers were recently honored for outstanding service in their schools. A nomination letter, letters of recommendation, and supporting documentation of professional development and student success by the nominee were reviewed by South Shore Foundation Board of Directors who then chose the winners. Each was presented a cash award of $1000 to use how they like, as well as an award certificate.

Tiny Ply, high school mathematics teacher at Bergman High School, was nominated by her school’s principal, Bryan Pruitt. He noted Ms. Ply’s commitment to all of her students and her quest for overall excellence in her work. In a letter of recommendation from another teacher Ply was described as being a positive role model, approachable, and full of respect for her students. Along with her duties as a teacher, she is active in curriculum and policy development, and is pursuing graduate studies in mathematics.

Tammie Weiland, elementary art teacher from Yellville-Summit chose the teaching profession because she wanted to share the love of art with children. Weiland has a reputation for consistently going beyond regular duties for her students. She has created an after school program for advanced art students, tutors students in literacy, and is very active in both local community and state art projects and learning opportunities.

Susie Smith, seventh and eighth grade English teacher and school-wide art teacher from Bruno-Pyatt Schools, is not only inspirational to her students personally, but has helped to dramatically improved their literacy test scores, according to Superintendent Mike Parrish. Smith is also known for taking personal time and expense to display student artwork and enter it into area competitions for students. She consistently strives to learn and demonstrate creativity in teaching.
