Six Receive 2009 South Shore Academic Scholarships

Six graduating seniors from area high schools have received 2009 South Shore Foundation Academic Scholarships of $1,000 each. School administration officials select their school's recipient from applicants based upon their academic records.

Scholarship winners and their high schools are:

Hank Beaver, Bruno-Pyatt; Daniel Fornes, Bergman; Corey Mitchell, Lead Hill; Shawna Staples, Flippin; Hannah Treece, Yellville-Summit; and Tricia Winkler, Omaha.
Hank Beaver
Hank Beaver of Bruno-Pyatt High School was the valedictorian of his class and the recipient of academic awards in Algebra, Art, Spanish, Biology and World History. His school activities included basketball, baseball, Future Business Leaders of America, Interact Club, and band, in which he was chosen All-Region. He plans to attend North Arkansas College. He is the son of Bart and Roberta Beaver of Everton.

Daniel Fornes
Daniel Fornes of Bergman High School was a member of Future Business Leaders of America, Key Club, Senior Scholars, National Honor Society, basketball, track, cross country, the Youth Leadership Team, and a participant in Boys State. He received academic awards in Business, Family and Consumer Science, and Psychology and was chosen as Student of the Month. He plans to attend University of Central Arkansas. He is the son of Shari Fornes of Harrison.

Corey Mitchell
Corey Mitchell of Lead Hill School served as Student Council President and Senior Class Vice President. His school activities included the Boone County Leadership Institute and Future Farmers of America. He was All-Conference, All-Region, and made the NAC All Tournament Team in basketball and participated in baseball, golf and track, as well. He plans to attend North Arkansas College. He is the son of Charlene Mitchell.

Shawna Staples
Shawna Staples of Flippin High School served as president of National Honor Society, and was a member of NACSPCA, Science Club, Student Council, SADD, yearbook staff, CIAO and the softball team. In 2008 she received a Citizens for Pets Award. She plans to attend University of Central Arkansas. She is the daughter of Jeff and Wendy Damron.

Hannah Treece
Hannah Treece of Yellville-Summit High School participated in National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, FCA, German Club, the Yell-Kat newspaper and was All-Conference and All-Region for basketball. She plans to attend Harding University. She is the daughter of Susan Treece of Yellville.

Tricia Winkler
Tricia Winkler of Omaha High School was active on the journalism staff and a member of OTAD. She plans to attend Northwest Arkansas Community College. She is the daughter of Connie Winkler.

As a charitable organization, South Shore Foundation annually funds scholarship programs for area students to attend Arkansas colleges and universities and makes grants to nonprofit organizations for educational advancement, environmental preservation, and economic development projects, including youth and adult leadership training in Marion County.
